A Guide to Secure Website Hosting

The Internet permeates every aspect of life in the modern age, and millions of websites exist on it. Your website must have secure hosting with how many people use the Internet. Without secure website hosting, your website could fall prey to scammers, hackers, or simply dissuade people from using your website.

If you are ready to learn about secure website hosting and why you need it, continue reading!

What is Website Hosting?

Website hosting is, in simple terms, a section of the internet used to store your website and all of its files. This allows people on the Internet to visit your website from around the world and is one of the most important parts of owning a website. You do not have a website without web hosting, so you must choose secure website hosting.

Types of Website Hosting

Now while it is important to consider which web host provider you go through, it is also important to consider the type of website hosting you wish to use. Each web hosting type has its own benefits and drawbacks, which you will have to decide when choosing a web host that works best for you.

There are six main types of web hosting: Shared Hosting, Virtual Private Server (VPS) Hosting, Dedicated Server Hosting, Cloud Hosting, Managed Hosting, and Colocation. While you may find other types of website hosting, these are the main six types you need to know about when looking at web hosting.

Shared Hosting

Shared hosting can be the perfect option for you if you are just starting out with your website. When you use shared hosting, your website is hosted in the same space on the internet as other websites. This means you share resources like RAM and CPU with every other website in your shared space.

While these plans tend to be cheaper, they come with drawbacks. Since all the resources are shared, if another server has a spike in usage, this can cause your site to slow down or, in extreme cases, even crash. If you have a basic website, go with shared hosting. Otherwise, you should check out a different option.

Virtual Private Server (VPS) Hosting

Virtual private server hosting is a great middle-ground for server hosting. While your website receives its own space on the server host, you still share the physical space with other websites. So while you receive more customization options and storage, you are still affected by traffic and usage spikes on the other sites.

So if you lack the technical knowledge to run a dedicated server-hosted website, VPS hosting is perfect. You get some of the major benefits of a dedicated server but do not have to have a ton of technical know-how.

Dedicated Server Hosting

Dedicated server hosting is the cream of the crop. You receive your dedicated server to host your website. You have full control and do not have to worry about other websites slowing down yours. This is the most expensive type of server hosting and can cost a lot.

Cloud Hosting

Cloud hosting is where a bunch of computers works together to provide the resources necessary for the computers using their hosting space. It is an excellent option for website owners who wish to scale their websites over time, as you only have to pay for the resources you use.

Managed Hosting

Managed hosting refers to hosting that is managed by the provider. Most hosting options you find will be managed hosting. The provider will deal with the day-to-day management, so you can spend more time on what matters, making your website wonderful.

Colocation

Colocation is an option if you want to run all the server hardware yourself. You rent out a colocation space, they provide the bandwidth, IP address, power, and cooling systems, and then you have to provide everything else. You will also have to look after your hardware, software, and services.

What to Consider When Looking for Site Hosting

When looking for site hosting, you will need to consider several things. These things are:

  • The host provider’s basic security features.
  • Does the host provide DDoS attack prevention tools?
  • Backups should be available to you.
  • Check reviews for the web host you are considering.

How to Ensure Secure Site Hosting

There are several ways you can ensure your website stays secure, and you must do these to keep your website running smoothly. When you first set up your website, you will want to get a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate. This encrypts your website’s data and helps keep it secure for everyone using it.

Regularly updating your website is also important, as this keeps your website’s plugins and themes from becoming outdated. Outdated tools on your website can cause an opening for hackers to access your website.
